Real-time machine monitoring for a Fortune 200 CNC manufacturer

Engineers see the live status of their machines on web and mobile, with clear normal, warning and failure states and alarms on their phones.

Machine status on a phone in the normal state with the current part count
Normal state: the machine finished part 14 of 40 and waits for the next cycle.

What had to work better

The manufacturer needed engineers to see machine status in real time. Machine data arrived through different adapter formats, and each user needed access to the machines and functions relevant to their work.

Built for each role

Engineers

Follow the machines they are responsible for and receive alarms on their phones.

Administrators

Manage companies, users, machines and alarm settings.

Warning: a tool is near its wear limit.

What we built

  • Data collection from machines through MTConnect, with C++ adapters and a desktop collector
  • A parser for different XML adapter formats that brings the signals into one model
  • Status logic for normal, warning and failure states
  • Services for data processing, availability checks and live updates over WebSockets
  • Alarm detection with mobile push and email notifications
  • Native Android and iOS apps with machine watchlists
  • An administration app for companies, users, machines and alarm settings
  • Hosting on AWS
  • MTConnect machine agents
  • Mobile push notifications
  • Email
  • C++
  • Electron
  • Angular
  • Go
  • PHP
  • Symfony
  • React
  • Kotlin
  • Swift
  • PostgreSQL
  • RabbitMQ
  • AWS

Fault: the door interlock is open and the emergency stop is active.

What changed

Engineers view machine status in the monitoring apps with consistent state indicators and access tailored to their responsibilities. Different adapter formats feed one monitoring workflow, and machines that stop reporting are flagged instead of looking idle.
